Along with not being able to trust any of what ray says, I don't think Una's word should be taken as fact without giving what she says any thought. For instance when she says that she has a good job, a few friends, and an ex-boyfriend, that she loves and wishes she was still with, we don't know for sure. Ray makes a valid point about her friends letting her think about what happened every second. If they were friends of any kind they would help her get passed what happened and certainly not let her go see him.
I don't think it's crucial to understand what the truth behind the secret really is to understand the story. To me the main point of the story, like the actors from the play said, is the love for Ray that Una has never gotten over and she finds Ray to reveal that to him. Although she's older in age, she has never matured that's why she can't find anyone that she truly loves and can stay with.

I have to agree with jason here when he says that EVERYTHING is left open for us. They dont give us one answer for ourselves. The book is full of secrets, theyre is big controversy over who the little girl was to ray at the end, if they had a sexual relationship together or if he was telling the truth to una about her being the only one.
To me i thought the play was really about if you sympathize with Ray or not, Una doesent exactly give him a fail chance, but he doesent really deserve a fair chance either in my opinion. Which made it difficult, obviously the guy had or still has some problems, but Una doesent make it any better for her image during the book/play. Dressed up basically like a slut to try and coarse Ray, which eventually works. But i have to agree that the bigger question is is Una's love for Ray real love or stupid obsession.
I agree completely. Neither Ray or Una are reliable enough characters to believe anything they say. I think Harrower deliberately wrote the play to be extremely ambiguous. In fact, without all of the secrecy and the untrustworthiness of the characters, the story would probably be very uninteresting.
Una definitely has not matured mentally or emotionally since she was that twelve-year-old girl. I think the whole situation damaged her to the point where she hasn't been able to move on and lead a normal life. It's obvious that she has been living a very chaotic and dramatic life because of all of this.
